Sand River Conservancy lies in the foothills of the Bontberg mountains, about 230km, three and a half hours from Cape Town on the edge of the Tankwa Karoo, with vegetation ranging from mountain grasses to succulents. The land was previously used as winter grazing for sheep, but it is now managed as a conservation area, with the aim of rehabilitating the veld where necessary, and encouraging the indigenous animals. Introduction of more larger grazing animals will be the next step now that the veld has been rested for some years.
The Karoo is known for its dark skies, making it ideal for star gazing. Plus, from Sand River, there are many activities including nearby game reserves, walking & bird watching in the veld, seasonal cherry picking, the local historic town of Matjiesfontein & for the more adventurous..adrenalin sports!
When staying at Sandriver, a high clearance vehicle is advised as the road is not suitable for the average sedan car. Please note, you will be asked to sign a disclaimer form before entering the property for the first time.
Please note this is a drought year so there is currently no water in the dam.
